Prior to joining the European Parliament
- preparation of academic material, including television and radio programmes, on a range of Open University courses, including 'The European Economic Community' and 'World Politics'
- extensive work as a lecturer at a range of institutions, including Coventry Polytechnic and the Polytechnic of the South Bank in London and during the 1975 EC Referendum Campaign, for the Workers Educational Association

European Community Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley
This post involved the presentation of a full undergraduate course at Berkeley entitled 'The European Community and Europe's Search for Unity', lectures to graduate and undergraduate audiences at Harvard, Pittsburgh, Stanford, the University of Southern California and Washington (Seattle) and presentations to a variety of non-academic groups in the San Francisco area.

1994 to 1999
Visiting Professor at the College of Europe in Bruges, presenting a course each year entitled 'The European Parliament and its Role within the Union'
May 1999 and thereafter
Visiting Fellow at the European Institute at the University of Sussex
Visiting Professor at the Institut des Etudes Politiques in Paris
Visiting Lecturer at Maastricht University assisting in the development of a course introducing students to practitioners from Brussels.
Since July 2008 Special Professor in European Institutions at the university, contributing more widely to EU studies, including the organisation of a yearly series of evening lectures on EU-related topics and the supervision of MA and PhD students.
