The Institute of Data Science was founded in 2017 by Dr. Michel Dumontier.
The core of the institute's research and educational mission is to promote data science to accelerate discovery across the sciences and humanities and across sectors of society. It focuses particularly on responsible data science by design, which grows from (but is not limited to) Dr. Dumontier’s work co-founding the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data principles.
As of 2021, IDS numbers 7 professors, 3 affiliated faculty, 19 postdocs and graduate students, a developer group of 5, and 4 support staff. IDS researchers collaborate within Maastricht University and the Netherlands, across the Euregio, and around the world. Since 2017, IDS has acquired over €5 million in research funding from Dutch, European, and US funders.
