"New variations: on innovating classical music”
Classical music organizations are looking into ways to connect with new audiences. Innovating a music practice with a rich history and cherished rituals, however, is challenging. How can orchestras and ensembles engage with their audiences in artistically meaningful ways? What does renewing concert formats mean for musicians, programmers, marketers, researchers and for the audience itself? How can we make we make the canon more relevant to today’s world?
In my valedictory lecture, I look back on the work of the Maastricht Centre for the Innovation of Classical Music (MCICM) over the past eight years. In a collaboration between Philzuid, Zuyd University of Applied Sciences and Maastricht University, we have shown that experimentation goes beyond coming up with marketing strategies or new concert forms. Everything changes. From the skills that musicians and staff need to be able to deviate from their routines, to the criteria that we use to judge the success of concerts.
