"Advancing brain health through modifiable risk and protective factors. The LIBRA2 index: update, validation, and genetic insights"
We are all getting older. Since 1990, global life expectancy has increased by about six years. This sounds great, of course, but it also means that various age-related diseases are becoming more common. Neurological disorders are currently the leading cause of disease burden worldwide, particularly dementia and stroke. Research has shown that many modifiable factors influence these brain disorders. In order to summarize all these factors in a single risk profile, the LIBRA score was developed in the past. It consists of 12 factors divided into different groups: cardiovascular factors, socio-psychological factors, lifestyle habits, and certain chronic conditions. This thesis demonstrates that the factors of hearing loss, social contact, and sleep are essential additions to an updated version of the LIBRA score (LIBRA2). In addition, with minor adjustments, the LIBRA2 score could be translated to stroke. Finally, the relationship between a healthy lifestyle and dementia is independent of genetic background; anyone can reduce their risk of dementia by adopting a healthy lifestyle!
