Enrolment before completing prior education ('zachte knip')

Below, we explain one of the leniency measures we have put in place to help students who have experienced delays in their studies due to COVID-19: the 'zachte knip' regulation. This regulation means that you can enrol in your next education programme before you have completed your prior education.

If you were not able to earn enough credits in the 2020/21 academic year to complete your prior education on time due to the COVID-19 pandemic, then in the 2021/22 academic year (for both the September and February intakes) you will have the opportunity to conditionally start your next education programme at UM under certain conditions.

When are you eligible for the 'zachte' knip?

If you are going from a bachelor's programme to a pre-master’s or master's programme:

  • If you are pursuing a bachelor’s degree at UM or at another institution of higher education, you will be able to make use of the 'zachte knip' regulation to start a pre-master’s or master’s programme at UM.
  • The 'zachte knip' regulation allows you to start a pre-master’s or master’s programme at UM if you have obtained at least 80% of the ECTS credits in the final year of your bachelor’s programme and have earned the required credits for all previous years. For example, if you are following a three-year bachelor’s programme, a maximum of 12 ECTS from year three of your bachelor’s programme may be incomplete. For enrolment in the master’s programme in Medicine, an additional condition applies on top of the above 80% standard, which is that all clusters must also have been completed
  • As an exception to the 80% standard above, some programmes apply a broader standard to admit students on the basis of the 'zachte knip'. By the end of May at the latest, the faculties will have updated this information and you will find more details about this on the Admission requirements page of the relevant programme.

If you are going from a pre-master’s programme to a UM master's programme:
If you are coming from a pre-master’s programme (at UM or another higher education institute), the UM master’s programme will assess whether you are eligible to start on the basis of your prior knowledge. The 80% standard will be used as a guideline.

If you are going from an HBO propedeuse (first-year diploma at a university of applied sciences) to a UM bachelor’s programme:
If you are in the propaedeutic phase at a Dutch university of applied sciences (HBO institution), you will be able to start a UM bachelor’s programme in September 2021 if you submit a tentative certificate of completion from your Dutch HBO institution to UM by 1 August 2021 at the latest, in which your HBO institution states that you are expected to successfully complete the propaedeutic phase by 1 January 2022. You must also meet all other admission requirements.

Please note: this regulation only relates to a deficiency in the diploma requirements during the admissions process. The generally applicable admission requirements remain in force, such as language requirements or that your prior education must be an appropriate match with the content of the programme to which you are applying.
