Enrolment before completing prior education ('zachte knip')

Below, we explain one of the leniency measures we have put in place to help students who have experienced delays in their studies due to COVID-19: the 'zachte knip' regulation. This regulation means that you can enrol in your next study programme before you have completed your prior education.

If you were not able to earn enough credits in the 2021/22 academic year to complete your prior education on time due to the COVID-19 pandemic, then in the 2022/23 academic year* you will have the opportunity to conditionally start your next study programme at UM, simultaneously with your current study programme.
*application for 'zachte knip' regulation is only possible for a study start in February 2023, no longer for a study start in September 2022

When are you eligible for the 'zachte' knip?

If you are going from a bachelor's programme to a pre-master’s or master's programme:

  • If you are pursuing a bachelor’s degree at UM or at another institution of higher education, you will be able to make use of the 'zachte knip' regulation to start a pre-master’s or master’s programme at UM.
  • The 'zachte knip' regulation allows you to start a pre-master’s or master’s programme at UM, provided that:
    - you have completed years 1 and 2 (and with a 4-year bachelor also year 3) fully and successfully; and
    - you have obtained at least 80% of the ECTS credits of the final year of your bachelor’s programme.
For example, if you are following a three-year bachelor’s programme, only a maximum of 12 ECTS from year three of your bachelor’s programme may be incomplete.
For enrolment in the master’s programme in Medicine, an additional condition applies on top of the above 80% standard, which is that all clusters must also have been completed.
  • As an exception to the 80% standard above, some programmes apply a broader standard to admit students on the basis of the 'zachte knip'. If you want to know whether the study programme of your choice applies a broader standard for the ‘zachte knip’ admission requirements for academic year 2022/2023, please visit the UM web pages that are dedicated to this study programme, specificly the web page ‘Admission requirements’.

If you are going from a pre-master’s programme to a UM master's programme:
If you are coming from a pre-master’s programme (at UM or another higher education institute), the UM master’s programme will assess whether you are eligible to start on the basis of your prior knowledge. The 80% standard will be used as a guideline.

Please note: this 'zachte knip' regulation only relates to a deficiency in the diploma requirements during the admission process. The generally applicable admission requirements remain in force, such as language requirements or that your prior education must be an appropriate match with the content of the programme to which you are applying.

Please note: in addition to starting with your next study programme at UM, you must also be enroled into your current study programme in order to complete that programme.

Please note: you must have completed your previous education no later than 31 August, 2023. If you can't achieve that, you are not allowed to continue studying in your (pre-)master's programme. You must first successfully complete your previous education before you can continue your studies. It is therefore wise to check in advance whether it is really possible to complete your previous education before 31 August, 2023.
