For this master's programme selection takes place on the basis of your quality and suitability.
For this your motivation, prior qualifications and your (professional) experience are important.
The Board of Admission evaluates the quality of your bachelor’s diploma by looking at your Grade Point Average, the level of statistics and mathematics and at how well your bachelor’s programme corresponds with the MSc programme.
All applicants should meet the general requirements:
- submit your curriculum vitae,
- write a letter of motivation,
- demonstrate proficiency in English.

UM graduates applying for a
Students with a UM BSc in International Business, or a UM-BSc in Economics and Business Economics are directly admissible. You do not have to write a letter of motivation.
Please note: you have to pass you bachelor’s exam before the start of the master programme. If you start in September, the final graduation date is 31 August, for students starting in February the graduation date can be no later than 31 January.
Other SBE graduates have to submit a complete application for assessment by the Board of Admission. The GMAT is not required in this case.
Graduates from the following universities
of applied sciences (HBO)

- NHTV Breda + SBM-programme
You are eligible for admission. You must provide a positive recommendation from your school, and a statement from you school indicating that you are following/have followed the required programme. You do not have to write a letter of motivation.
Graduates from specific NVAO-accredited
institute or programme
You are eligible for assessment by the Board of Admission. You do not have to take a GMAT or GRE test.
Graduates from another bachelor’s programme
You are eligible for assessment by the Board of Admission. You are required to pass a GMAT/ GRE test.
HBO bachelor’s graduates are encouraged to follow an Academic Minor/Minor Academic Orientation/SBM programme at one of our partner institutes before starting the master’s programme.
1. Submit your curriculum vitae
All candidates must provide a cv. Please list your education, relevant extracurricular activities and internship/professional experience.
2. Write a letter of motivation
All candidates must write a letter of motivation. Please provide good arguments about why you want to do this master's programme at Maastricht University and why you believe that you can successfully complete the programme.
3. Demonstrate proficiency in English
This master's programme is taught in English. You must therefore have a thorough verbal and written command of English. If you meet one of the following criteria, you do not have to submit additional proof of your English proficiency:
- you are a native English speaker
- you are an EU citizen
- you completed a bachelor's programme that was taught in English
If you do not meet any of these criteria, you will need to submit your scores from an IELTS or a TOEFL exam as proof of your English proficiency. You have to prepare and register for these exams yourself.
Plan to take your exam well before the application deadline. It can take a while before you get the results.
- IELTS exam: minimum overall score of 6.5
- TOEFL exam, paper-based: minimum overall score of 575
- TOEFL exam, computer-based: minimum overall score of 233
- TOEFL exam, internet-based: minimum overall score of 90

Indicate UM as recipient
Official GMAT-/GRE- score report have to be sent directly to us by the test centre. Please do not forget to indicate us as a recipient. The programme code is 2WH-4N-65 (GMAT) or 7102 (GRE) or you can select us from the list of recipients. We do not accept score reports that you yourself send to us.

Mindful GMAT Foundation provides GMAT preparation courses. You will receive a 10% discount on this course, if you mention the code "UM-MSc2017" when registering. Please note that you may choose either one of the two tests. If you decide to take the GRE-test though, please recalculate your score to a GMAT-score via this conversion tool.
Minimum required scores
- Total score of 650 or higher, and an Analytical Writing Assessment score of 4.0 or higher: you will be admitted.
- Total score of less than 550, or an Analytical Writing Assessment score of less than 4.0: you will be rejected.
The files of all other applicants will be assessed by the Board of Admission, based on the criteria which are described in Required Documents.
Description of the Statistics courses in the bachelor’s programme
All candidates need to provide proof of statistical knowledge. Please upload all relevant courses in Statistics you followed during your bachelor’s programme in a separate Word-document. You can upload it in the category ‘Other in My UM. Please do not use more than 10 sentences per course.
