Admission requirements

For the Master's programme Art, Literature and Society enrolment takes place on the basis of your quality and suitability. For this your motivation, prior qualifications and your (professional) experience are important.

All candidates should meet the general requirements:

  1. submit your curriculum vitae,
  2. write a letter of motivation,
  3. demonstrate proficiency in English.

Graduates from the UM bachelor's Arts and Culture

You can apply for the continuing master's programme and are guaranteed a place. You still have to apply via Studielink. Please upload a valid ID and a recent passport picture. Please note, that you have to graduate before 1 September 2018. If you did the Dutch variant, then you must satisfy the English language requirement. You don't need to write a letter of motivation. 

Graduates from a relevant university bachelor’s programme 

You are eligible for admission if you have a bachelor’s degree from a relevant academic field, for example, philosophy or sociology. You should have obtained good marks in your prior qualifications, and have relevant work experience.

Graduates from another bachelor’s programme

Excellent students with a relevant University of Applied Sciences degree (e.g. HBO/ Hochschule), or an academic BA or BSc Bachelor in a field that does not grant direct admission into this programme, can follow a Pre-master year. Once successfully completed, this will then guarantee you access to the master's programme Art, Literature and Society.

General requirements

1. Submit your curriculum vitae

All candidates must provide a cv. Please list your education, relevant extracurricular activities and internship/professional experience.

2. Write a letter of motivation

All candidates must write a letter of motivation. Please provide good arguments about why you want to do this master's programme at Maastricht University and why you believe that you can successfully complete the programme.

3. Demonstrate proficiency in English

This master is taught in English. You must therefore have a thorough active and passive command of English.

No additional evidence of sufficient command of the English language is required if you meet any of the following criteria:

  • you are a native English speaker
  • you have completed an English-taught Bachelor or Master

If you do not meet any of these criteria, you have to provide evidence of sufficient command of the English language by either an IELTS, a TOEFL or a Cambridge test.

You have to prepare and register for these tests yourself. Plan your test in time.
It can take some time before you get the results.

The required scores are:

  • IELTS test: minimum score overall 6.5 and writing minimum score 6.5
  • TOEFL test: overall, internet-based minimum score 90 and writing minimum score 25
  • TOEFL test: overall, paper-based minimum score 575
  • TOEFL test: overall, computer-based minimum score 232
  • A Cambridge certificate: C or higher for the CAE (Certificate in Advanced English).

Non-EEA students must pay a €100 handling fee

Non-EEA students who apply for this master's programme will have to pay a handling fee. Your application will not be taken into consideration without the required fee of  €100 (excl. bank costs) which you will have to pay when you apply.
The handling fee is to cover certain administrative costs in relation to your application.
