This course will be taught in Dutch or English, depending on the class composition.

Target group

PhD candidates from the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences and the interfaculty research institutes with a good command of the material covered in Statistics part 1.

Duration

The course has 10 sessions, each consisting of a 2-hour tutorial and a 1-hour practical. Participants must devote half a day to self-study between each session.

Method

Participants will follow lectures and can check the theory behind the analysis methods that are discussed using other materials, such as literature, knowledge clips and a syllabus that is provided by the tutor. The material outlined in the lectures will be dealt with more extensively in the computer practical where instructions are provided to perform the analyses with SPSS and R (participants can choose which statistical software they use).

Objective

  • Good statistical knowledge is essential when planning and conducting scientific research. Statistical analysis is also necessary for an accurate interpretation of the research results. This course offers an introduction to the statistical techniques used to determine intervention effects and group effects, while correcting for potential confounding variables. It also offers participants the opportunity to practice these methods using SPSS and/or R.
  • This knowledge is necessary for analysing the results obtained from the participant's own research. It also helps participants to evaluate the results of other published research and understand the relevance of these results for their own disciplines.
