Italian online

Are you interested in the Italian language and culture? Or would you like to refresh your knowledge and take it to the next level? Would you like to study online, where and when it suits you? Then the course ‘Italian Online, intensive coaching’ is what you are looking for.

The course is designed for students of all levels of the CEFR. It consists of four modules, in which you combine Skype sessions with a coach and independent study to improve your language skills. The online self-study component is supported by effective language training on Babbel.com and Quizlet.com. The focus is on speaking and listening skills.

 

Take the course individually or with a partner

You can take this course alone, or with a fellow student. Students taking the course on their own will have eight 30-minute Skype sessions with a coach. Students taking the course along with another student will have eight 45-minute Skype sessions. In both cases, you will need to invest about 80 hours of independent study to successfully complete the course.

Module 1

Module 1 is suitable for people with no prior knowledge of Italian. Once you have completed this course, you would be able to:

  • greet people
  • present yourself and others
  • ask and give personal information
  • get around in shops and restaurants
  • conduct simple conversations in the past and present tense
  • discuss everyday life activities such as work, study or sport

Your coach will give you specific study materials and research assignments, use the effective language training of babbel.com. Keep in mind that you will need to invest about 90 hours of independent study to successfully complete the course.

Module 2

In this module, you will considerably improve your language skills. You will be able to:

  • talk about your work or study
  • discuss places, situations or holidays
  • describe people’s feelings in the past
  • make comparisons and give descriptions
  • conduct a job interview
  • give advice
  • express preferences
  • detect similarities and differences in opinions
  • give details about future projects
  • discuss the human body, tastes, preferences, colours, forms, sizes and clothes
  • ask about products and make purchases in shops

In your independent study time, you will be working in Wikispaces, where you can download extra resources for free. You will need to subscribe at babbel.com. You can choose any subscription you like (the longer the subscription, the cheaper it is). Your coach will give you specific study materials and research assignments, use the effective language training of babbel.com. Keep in mind that you will need to invest about 90 hours of independent study to successfully complete the course.

Module 3

Module 3 is for people with intermediate knowledge of Italian, meaning you should be able to make yourself understood in common everyday situations. You will learn how to:

  • lead a debate
  • give presentations about a current topic
  • discuss familiar topics
  • express your feelings and your wishes
  • share your opinion

Module 4

Module 4 is for people with a fairly high level of Italian.
Meaning you are able to make yourself understood in common everyday situations even though you might not have the all the necessary vocabulary. In this module you will improve your ability to debate and present certain topics and you will learn to:

  • express cause
  • purpose and effect
  • express wishes and consent
  • argue, eveluate and persuade
  • make notes and summaries
  • discuss topics such as climate, society, politics and culture
  • make complaints, decline offers and express your own needs

Requirements

UM students, staff and external participants are welcome to join this course. If you have no prior knowledge of Italian, you can simply register for Module 1 without first doing an intake. To take the second module, you must first successfully complete the first module or have a comparable level of Italian. In the latter case, you will need to do an intake with one of our staff members before registering for a course to ensure your knowledge of the language is suitable for this module. 

The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) provides a set of descriptors that can help you gauge your level of proficiency in any given language. To determine your current or target level, please download Levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (PDF, 0.48MB).

For one participant:

  • UM students, staff and alumni: € 290
  • All other participants: € 360

For two participants:

  • UM students, staff and alumni: € 217.50 per person
  • All other participants: € 270 per person

Would you like to meet us for an intake or receive more information? You can email us at languages-intake-IT to make an appointment, free of charge. The appointment will take place at the Maastricht University Language Centre (Sint Servaasklooster 32).

Book an intake well before the course is scheduled to begin. It will be simpler to make the appointment and you will have a greater chance of finding a place in the course of your choice.

Certificate and ECTS

After completing a module, you will receive a certificate and three ECTS credits. To be eligible, you must have a sufficient score in one written exam and three oral ones.

  • For module 1, the CEFR attainment level is A1
  • For module 2, the CEFR attainment level is A2
