Academic writing: online PhD writing

Would you like to learn how to write an academic paper, but do not have the time? Then you should consider taking our online PhD writing course. The course consists of 8 webinars lasting 45 minutes each. You’ll focus on linguistics and structure, two important components for writing in a clear and concise manner. We’ll also analyse actual samples of your writing and focus on issues within your work.

Content, format, activities

The course covers the following topics:

  • Readability
  • Use of connectives
  • Verb matters
  • Reporting on previous research
  • Structure (incl. published articles)
  • Generalizing & qualifying
  • Peer-to-peer feedback
  • Common errors

Admission requirements

The course is open to those PhDs with an UM or azM contract working at one of the FHML departments, and to external PhD candidates registered at FHML with a personnel number a UM or AZM contract and UM email address.

You should:

  • have a Maastricht University email address (to be able to access the course material
  • have a good internet connection, camera, headset/ internal speakers,
  • be motivated to participate fully in the course (presence at every session and submission of homework).

You must also be able to indicate why you are unable to participate in the face-to-face courses.

You are kindly requested to submit a short written description of your own research (e.g. abstract or a 1-2 page summary) 2 weeks prior to the course commencement date. Materials will be sent via email before each session, or will be made available via the Student Portal.

End result and certificate

You will receive 1.5 ECTS and a certificate upon completion of the course. You must participate in at least 6 of the 8 sessions (preferably: all) to receive a certificate and ECTS points. You can login to view missed or earlier sessions as all sessions will be recorded.

Fees

Online course: € 450. PhD candidates registered at FHML, MaCSBIO, M4I or Merln may be eligible for funding. Please check with your employer whether you are eligible for such funding. If you are eligible for funding, you are required to provide the Language Centre with:

  • your department or school
  • personnel number (700……)

If you are not eligible for departmental funding, the Language Centre will send you an invoice directly. Please note that registration is an agreement to pay.
