Excellence programmes

At Maastricht University, we believe that science can offer concrete, tangible solutions to the problems of today and tomorrow. Today's challenges transcend national borders. The world is our playing field, and Maastricht University offers the most international learning environment in the Netherlands. To help students to excell, we developed the following excellence programmes alongside regular bachelor's and master's programmes:

Master of Global Business Programme (MGB)

Get a master's degree while studying on three continents. The Master of Global Business programme (MGB) is a comprehensive, tri-continent, cohort-based programme. Maastricht University students from the master’s programme in International Business work closely together with students from the University of Victoria (Canada) and CENTRUM (Peru). You will learn about the comparative socio-economic environments in North America, South America and Europe. The blending of academic rigor, exposure to business practice and immersion in cross-cultural experiences facilitates a firsthand understanding of the complexities of doing business internationally.

You will study together with a group of 40 international students as a cohort at each of the three partner institutions. This will help you develop a high level of cultural awareness and the ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.

Please note that only students who start their master’s at SBE in the September semester can take part in a Double Degree or a Network programme. Interested students are encouraged to apply at the latest in May, preceding the start of the master’s programme at SBE. Exceptions will, on occasion, apply.

Eligibility and admission requirements

Eligibility and admission requirements

If you are interested in the MGB programme you can already apply for the selection procedure as soon as you have sent in your application for the MSc in International Business, track ‘Organisation: Management, Change & Consultancy’ or track ‘Strategy and Innovation’. This means you do not have to wait until you have an actual valid MSc registration.  SBE will consider your academic background (bachelor’s degree), your curriculum vitae as well as your motivation.
If you get selected to take part in the MGB programme, however, you do need to have an official MSc registration at SBE before you are allowed to start the programme.

If you are interested in the MGB programme, please send an e-mail to r.rijnders@maastrichtuniversity.nl. You will then be provided with a form that you will need to fill in, stating your interest in the MGB programme. Finally, return this form together with a motivation letter for this programme, an updated CV, a copy of your passport and your bachelor’s transcript to r.rijnders@maastrichtuniversity.nl

Your motivation letter, CV and bachelor’s transcript will be evaluated. You will be informed about the results of this step via e-mail. The best students will be invited for an interview.
For students who did their bachelor degree at Maastricht University or graduated from specific NVAO-accredited (Dutch-Flemish organisation) institutes and programmes, the GPA                during their bachelor study has to be at least a 7.0 in the Dutch 0-10 grading system or a B+ in the international A-D/F letter grading system. For students who did not do their bachelor study at Maastricht University a GMAT  requirement of minimum 600 and a minimum analytical writing score of 5 applies. The  selected students are invited for an interview.

After the interview, you will receive the results via e-mail and a maximum of 10 students will be offered a place in the MGB programme. The selected students will have to confirm their participation via e-mail. Students who are selected to take part in the programme should have 100% study progress in their courses of course period 1. If you do not meet this requirement you will be expelled from the MGB programme (you can of course continue the regular IB programme).

International Triangle Programme

The International Triangle Programme is a master's programme that educates the global leaders of the future by providing culturally diverse academic and applied experiences. It combines the strengths of the best institutions on three continents. In the International Triangle Programme, education, research and practice meet in three international learning environments. During the programme, you will:

  • engage in academic experiences at three top academic institutions. All partner schools involved in the International Triangle Programme have AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA accreditation. This guarantees common commitment to education that is based on academic research.
  • participate in applied experiences in which each partner incorporates a real project collaboration between faculty, professionals and students that goes beyond a traditional internship. This helps you to develop integral competencies that are necessary to work in an internationalising labor market. It also improves the connection and transition between education and work.
  • experience three different (business) cultures and parts of the world. This guarantees immersion into diverse perspectives, which can challenge assumptions that normally guide interactions with others. Dealing with the dynamics of change in this manner contributes to the development of self-awareness, flexibility and adaptability, which are indispensable skills for succeeding in today’s labor market.

Please note that only students who start their master’s at SBE in the September semester can take part in a Double Degree or a Network programme. Double Degree programmes

A Double Degree programme is an approved combined study programme that leads to two master's degrees. A Double Degree programme gives you the unique opportunity to study at two top universities. You will complete part of your master's programme at an institution abroad and part at Maastricht University’s School of Business and Economics (SBE). After successfully completing all the requirements of both master's programmes, you will be awarded a master's degree from two universities. Double Degree programmes come with two general options:

Double Degree programmes that include a bachelor's exchange period:

  • Queen's University, Queen's School of Business, Kingston, Canada
  • EDHEC Business School, Lille-Nice, France

Double Degree programmes that do not include a bachelor's exchange period:

  • Queensland University of Technology, QUT Business School, Brisbane, Australia
  • Université Catholique de Louvain, Institut d'Administration et de Gestion, Louvain-La Neuve (UCL), Belgium
  • Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal

If you are interested in a Double Degree programme, you can already apply for the selection procedure as soon as you have sent in your application for the regular master’s programme. This means you do not have to wait until you are fully enrolled in the master’s programme to take part in the selection. If you are selected to take part in a Double Degree programme, however, you do need to be fully enrolled in the master’s programme at Maastricht University before you are allowed to start the Double Degree.

Due to different national restrictions and differences between universities, each Double Degree programme looks different, but it usually involves an equal amount of study time at each university. Credits obtained at both universities within the programme will be mutually acknowledged, resulting in a shortening of study time compared to acquiring both degrees separately.

SBE is highly selective in its choice of partner universities, adding only high profile, research oriented and accredited (preferably both EQUIS and AACSB accreditation) universities to its list. All of our partners are the leading institutions in their country in the field of economics and/or business, and offer great academic opportunities that represent additional benefits for students.

The selection criteria for these programmes can differ from the selection criteria for studying abroad during the bachelor's programme. Some Double Degree programmes (such as Queen’s and EDHEC) incorporate the SBE bachelor’s exchange period; therefore, you have to submit your application for these programmes when you apply for the study abroad semester during the bachelor's programme. More information about the application and admission requirements is specified per programme.

Note: If you want to take part in the selection for the Management /IB Double Degree programme at Nova Lisboa, please let us know as soon as possible, as this is the only Double Degree that starts with the semester abroad.

The added value of a Double Degree programme:

  • You obtain two master’s degrees in considerably less time than it would take to earn them separately.
  • You are able to experience the "best of both worlds".
  • Each university adds its specialty to the programme, thereby complementing the offer of the partner university.
  • You experience a different culture, business environment and teaching style and gain greater perspective in addressing international issues.
  • You have the opportunity to develop business-level fluency in two languages.
  • You only pay tuition fees at SBE (plus an administrative fee).

EDHEC
Niet ge- definieerd

EDHEC Business School

EDHEC Business School has been providing first-class management education for more than 100 years and is consistently ranked amongst the Top 5 French Business Schools. The Double Degree programme at EDHEC starts during your bachelor's programme. In 2016, EDHEC was ranked 15th worldwide in the Financial Times' Masters in Management ranking and was ranked 7th in the sub-category ’Top for Economics’. Furthermore, L'Etudiant-L'Express rated EDHEC second in France for the quality of its relations with businesses. The EDHEC Business School is also ranked #1 in France for education and research in the ranking of Le Point news magazine. Like SBE, it is one of the few business schools worldwide to boast the Triple Crown of academic excellence, with accreditations from AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA.

Why choose this programme?

  • You’ll earn two master's degrees in just 12 months:
    • Master of Science degree from EDHEC Business School
    • Master of Science degree in International Business from Maastricht University School of Business and Economics
  • You’ll gain professional experience through an internship. EDHEC offers you assistance and excellent internship possibilities.
  • You’ll experience two different educational styles. EDHEC offers more applied and lecture-based education; students learn how to apply theory to real business cases. SBE offers Problem-Based Learning, which is more theoretical and research based.
  • You’ll have a wider range of courses and specialisations to choose from, with opportunities from both EDHEC and SBE.
  • During your study at EDHEC, you can participate in EDHEC's career activities. For example, you could participate in the annual Finance Recruitment Fair with companies like BNP Paribas, Danone and L'Oréal.
  • As a Double Degree graduate, you can benefit from the strong SBE and EDHEC alumni networks. According to Le Point News Magazine, 90% of the EDHEC alumni are very satisfied with the school's career services.
  • This construction offers you great value for money since you only pay tuition fees at SBE for the duration of this programme.
  • SBE students are exempted from the GMAT exam, which is normally required for students who want to participate in one of the master’s programmes at EDHEC.

You will start the programme in Maastricht with the first semester of the Master of Science programme in International Business (Strategic Marketing specialisation). In January, you will take part in the skills training 'Writing a master's thesis', which will enable you to start your thesis.
  2. MBus programme at QUT (end of February - June or end November)
After the first semester at SBE, you will move to Brisbane to take part in the second semester of the QUT Master in Business (MBus) programme. You have two options: 1) to stay one semester at QUT and take four courses plus a project in this period, or 2) to stay two semesters at QUT until the end of November. You will follow four courses plus a project from either the Marketing or from the Integrated Marketing Communication major. The Marketing major is designed to develop the management skills needed for more strategic roles in marketing, focusing on the practical development of marketing strategies, tactics and plans for business opportunities and threats. Alternatively, the IMC major focuses on the strategic integration of the functions of public relations, advertising, promotion, direct marketing, and personal selling to achieve brand equity and increase the effectiveness of promotional communications with target audiences. The above mentioned project topic at QUT must be different than the SBE thesis topic.
  3. Master's thesis at SBE
After completion of the semester(s) at QUT, you will transfer back to Maastricht to finish writing your master's thesis at SBE.

Participants in the Double Degree programme are responsible for getting acquainted with, and for abiding by, the rules and regulations of their host university in a timely manner, especially with regard to examination types, schedules and forms of resits, if any. The Education and Examination Regulations for the master’s programmes at the School of Business and Economics of Maastricht University apply to all Double Degree programmes.

Fixed curriculum
Please note that all SBE network programmes (including the Double Degree programmes) have a fixed curriculum. It is not possible to switch/waive /cancel any of the courses offered in these fixed programmes. This does not mean that all requests for change are automatically approved. If you decide to make changes to the curriculum on your own, and take courses that are not mentioned in the relevant programme outline, you run the very real risk of not being allowed to graduate from the programme.

"Since the very beginning of my studies, I developed a deep passion for Quantitative Methods. It was not until my exchange semester at UC Berkeley, however, that I discovered how the sound use of statistical concepts can provide solutions for the most pressing challenges of our time. Back in Maastricht, I was delighted to join the MARBLE program which gave me the opportunity to conduct my own research. Thanks to the MARBLE program, some old statistics books and while standing on the shoulders of giants, I made it to the national Student Research Conference where I will present my findings to a panel of professors from all Dutch universities."
