Why study Europe?
Since its conception, the European Union has brought countries across Europe together. Under the motto ‘United in Diversity’, the European Union has introduced a common currency, implemented shared policies on agriculture and the environment, and created legislation on health and social justice that affects daily life in every corner of the continent.
A diverse union
But what does Europe mean from a political point of view? Is it realistic to form a union between countries with different languages, climates, religions and social and political outlooks? Does it make sense to try to bind these countries together through shared policies and strategies? How will political alliances or healthcare policies change as the European Union continues to expand? What impact does all this have on you as an individual?
Seeking solutions
As the world changes and Europe becomes increasingly interdependent, it is more important than ever that there are people who can find answers to these questions. From political and economic concerns to climate change and disease, we are faced with issues that cannot be confined by borders; and the solutions that we develop cannot be limited by nationality either. Throughout Europe, there is a growing demand for people who are familiar with the needs and problems of an entire continent. Could you be one of those people?
Studying Europe in the heart of Europe
By choosing to study Europe in detail, you could be taking the first step towards a Europe-focused career. And where better to do that than in Maastricht, the birthplace of the European Union? Led by world-renowned academic staff, Maastricht University’s European programmes (bachelor’s and master’s) combine history, philosophy, law, politics, cultural and social studies, and economics to provide you with one of the most interdisciplinary and diverse degrees around. It is an exceptional start to a European career.
