Making economic globalization work


Do you worry about the effects of globalization on developing countries or the environment, or are you enjoying life in the global village? Either way, globalization has significantly changed the world. Foreign direct investment, international trade but also migration have influenced the world economy, and pose new challenges for all. This program provides both the broad overview and the detailed knowledge that you need to start a career in the global economy.


Global linkages

The Global Innovation Economics track has strong links with the research institute UNU-Merit, located in Maastricht and part of the United Nations University. UNU-Merit enables you to reach directly into the world of cutting-edge research on the global economy, with opportunities for internships and writing a thesis.

Global Innovation Economics is a 1-year, full-time programme taught entirely in English. Graduates will a master's degree in International Economic Studies with a specialisation in Global Innovation Economics.

Having completed this track, you will be able to:

  • understand the economic aspects of important global issues;
  • analyse international economic developments, such as the global recession;
  • understand how globalisation matters for firms’ strategies and policy;
  • evaluate global economic governance and policies.

As well as the standard admission requirements, you should:

  • feel at home in an international environment, in which people “think globally”;
  • be interested in global problems and their economic dimensions;
  • want to identify and solve (policy) problems;
  • have a basic knowledge of micro and macroeconomics;
  • have analytical skills and the ability to work with numbers.
