Maastricht University in top 10 ‘young’ universities worldwide

11 June 2013

Maastricht University climbed from 8th place to 7th in the second edition of the QS ‘Top 50 Under 50’ ranking. This special ranking for young universities was published for the first time last year to give an indication which universities may in the future become top universities worldwide. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is leading this year’s ‘Top 50 Under 50’, a special ranking derived from the QS World University Rankings, wherein UM ranks 107th.

The QS World University Ranking evaluates universities on their percentage of international students, citations, academic reputation, reputation with employers, staff/student ratios and the percentage international staff. Ben Sowter, Head of Division of the QS Intelligence Unit: "The 50 under 50 is a list of remarkable institutions. Institutions that have achieved in less than 50 years what others have taken centuries to do. Since it is a list of those under 50, each year a few that pass that milestone will drop out and others will be promoted, but Maastricht have improved their overall rank as well, in a context of escalating global standards. In many ways it is these younger more dynamic institutions that are best equipped to adapt and benefit from the changing landscape of HE over the next few years."
