PhD Programme in Public Policy, Innovation & Development

Public Policy, Innovation & Development (PPID)

The PhD in Public Policy, Innovation & Development is a multidisciplinary programme offered by UNU-MERIT and the Maastricht Graduate School of Governance (MGSoG), providing advanced training in the knowledge and skills most relevant to policy analysis and the economics of technology and innovation.

Built around core courses for all PhD fellows, the programme has two specializations leading to a PhD in Economics and Policy Studies of Technical Change at UNU-MERIT, or a PhD in Public Policy and Policy Analysis at the MGSoG.

During their first year, students complete a basic, compulsory training programme conducted by leading scholars of the host and partner universities. These courses are taught in Maastricht and spread across two semesters.

The PhD programme trains researchers in governance, social protection and social policy. Leading scholars from top research institutes in eight EU countries provide personal supervision and monitoring during the entire programme. The supporting institutes are organised in a network which provides the PhD fellows with:

  • advanced training modules
  • individual research advice
  • innovative think tank activities
  • academic counselling and supervision

The Public Policy, Innovation & Development programme trains researchers to become a pivotal element in national and international social governance. The focus is on making systems economically, financially and socially more sustainable. The main objective of the programme is to create a critical mass of researchers, specialised in governance, social protection and social policy, who are able to provide advice based on sound research.

The PhD programme in Public Policy, Innovation & Development is a three-year programme taught in English. It starts on 1 September each year.
