Successful first course in PBL survival skills
26 August 2009
This August the Maastricht University Language Centre piloted a new course: Survival Skills for the PBL classroom and beyond. The aim of the course is to help foreign students to successfully bridge the gap between their previous learning experiences and the demands of the Maastricht University Problem- Based Learning. According to student feedback the first course succeeded.
Here’s a sample of what the first students said about the course:
- “This course helps me to be more confident.”
- “In the course we built confidence particularly in team working in English by means of the collaboration necessary for achieving group tasks.”
- “I lost the fear of speaking English.’
- “Now I’m not so nervous about starting to study.”
- “I think that without this course I could have had some difficulties with next university classes, because of the different approach used at my home university.”
The Language Centre staff is excited about the strong start to the new course, and looks forward to work with new groups of foreign students. The plan is to follow up with the first students in a couple of months to determine how the Survival Skills course has supported their success as they begin their studies. We hope that many students will be able to take advantage of this head start to their success in the future.
