CHE-Excellence Ranking 2009: Maastricht University SBE most awarded!

29 October 2009

The Excellence Ranking 2009 by the German Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE) analyzes master and doctoral programmes of European universities in the fields of economics, political science and psychology, whereas the first ranking in 2007 concentrated on the natural sciences and mathematics. The 2009 ranking is based on two factors: research strengths and internationalization.

CHE’s unique ranking system

In comparison to some other, more traditional rankings, the CHE Excellence Ranking does not award a final grade (accompanied by a ranking position) but instead CHE awards universities with a star per performance indicator. Only if universities do well they receive such a star. According to CHE “Achieving a star means that the respective institution belongs to the group of institutions that accounts for at least 50% of the total achievement, e.g. 50% of the total amount of publications counted for all institutions”.

Star indicators

This year’s Excellence Ranking analyzed three fields of science, namely economics, political science and psychology. For each field, universities could be awarded a maximum of 10 stars based on their results for 10 different indicators, being: overall study situation, international doctorates, international master's students, international staff, highly cited books, Erasmus Mundus master's, teaching staff mobility, student mobility, citations and publications.

8 stars for Maastricht University SBE!
69 universities throughout Europe, of which 7 are located in the Netherlands received one or more stars in the field of Economics.  CHE awarded Maastricht University School of Business and Economics with a total of 8 out of 10 possible stars, one more than any other European university! Die Zeit commented in its weekly magazine in which this ranking was published: “Maastricht University does not leave much to be desired: with eight stars out of ten possible categories it is the best based on these criteria.”

CHE Excellence Ranking vs CHE University Ranking
CHE publishes several other higher education rankings. The yearly CHE University Ranking is based on both student and professor judgments and is a broader comparison of study programmes. In this ranking, only universities from Germany and some neighbouring countries (amongst others Maastricht University) are included.
