UM card
- The Maastricht University Library is only accessible for those who have a UM card:
- After activating your UM card as a library pass, you are able to view or borrow materials from the library. UM cards belonging to UM students are automatically activated for library use.
By activating your UM card as a library pass, you agree to be bound by all rights and obligations listed in the present usage rules of the Maastricht University Library. - As a UM card owner, you are at all times responsible for its use or abuse, even by any third parties.
- Please report the loss or theft of your UM card to the document supply desk as soon as possible, so that it can be blocked and unauthorised usage can be prevented.
Member data
- The library is responsible for protecting the personal data of its members, in accordance with the rules and conditions stated in the Dutch Privacy Protection Act.
- The library stores personal data for the purpose of its membership administration, the supply of products and services, and communication with users on library activities, products and services. Members have the right to view their data which are kept on file, to have these amended, complemented or deleted.
- The library will not use these personal data for any purposes that are not compatible with its obligations nor will it give third parties access to such data. An exception to this rule can be made on the basis of the legal powers of the police force and legal authorities to demand identifying and/or usage data within the framework of prevention, investigation and prosecution of penal offences.
- The library automatically retrieves students' personal details from Maastricht University's student database.
- You are obliged to immediately inform the document supply desk of the Inner City or Randwyck location – and if you are a student, also the Student Services Centre (SSC) – in person of any changes in your personal data.
Borrowing
- The maximum loan period for borrowed materials is four weeks. You are expected to return the borrowed materials before the loan period has expired (depending on the expiry date) or to extend the loan period.
- The maximum number of loanable items per member is listed on the library homepage > Collections > Loan information.
Extensions
- Extending a loan period can be done through the library catalogue (up to 10 extensions per item), or at the document supply desk. Extension is not possible if the material has been reserved by another user or if you owe the library money.
Returns / Reminders
- When borrowed materials are returned, you may request a certificate of return. If you wish to receive such a certificate, please inform the document supply desk in advance.
- If you fail to return the material or to extend the loan period on time, the library will send you - as an additional service - a first reminder by email, to inform you that the loan period has expired. You may then return the material without charge and - if it has not been reserved by another user - extend the loan period
- You cannot claim not having received any reminder. It is your responsibility to return borrowed materials or to extend loan periods in time.
- If you fail to respond to the first reminder, then a second one will be sent to you. This automatically involves a fine of €5 (per item). In addition, you will be barred from borrowing or extending the loan period of any other items, until the borrowed materials have been returned and the fine has been paid.
- If you fail to return the borrowed materials, you will receive an invoice, which will include the reminder costs, a fine (€50 per item) and administration costs (€25). Your UM card will be blocked for any other loan transactions. If the item concerned comes from any of the special collections, instead of the standard fine, an appropriate amount will be determined in consultation with the custodian.
- If you return the borrowed material within one month after the date of the invoice, reimbursement of the fine may be possible.
- If the borrowed materials are still not returned, the matter will be handed over to a debt collection agency. Your UM card will be unblocked as soon as all fines and expenses have been paid to the debt collection agency and the library has received confirmation of such. In all circumstances, the borrowed materials remain the property of the University Library.
Liability in case of damage and/or loss
- You must return any materials borrowed (from the collection of Maastricht University Library or borrowed through ILL) in the same state as they were when you received them.
- Making notes or underlining passages in books is not allowed.
- Lending out materials to third parties is prohibited.
- Library members will be held liable for any damage to the material, regardless of how or by whom the damage was caused.
