Universiteit Maastricht

Top sporters and study

Studying in Maastricht and competing in sports on a high level could lead to a variety of problems. To ensure that the one (your study) will not suffer from the other (sporting) we have tried to provide some kind of support to top athletes within the opportunities given by the study system of Maastricht. This support will be given individually and tailored to the specific situation of the athlete.

Support for top sports may consist of

Facilities concerning the study, for instance

  • Adapting the study programme in as far there are possibililies within the faculy
  • Regulation Financial Support Students UM
  • More general facililities, for instance training facilities (fitness licence UM SPORT) or mediating for appropriate accommodation.

Note: If and what support may be provided will depend on prior evaluation of the situation. The evaluation not only concerns the student sporter’s situation. An adaptation of the study programme or creating facilities will always have to be practicable and reasonable. The Regulation Financial Support Students UM states number of criteria for financial support.

The earlier the better to discuss these matters, so that there will be time to look for proper solutions.

Who are entitled?

In order to judge the application for support due to top sports, Universiteit Maastricht asks for advice at the NOC/NSF or the Olympic Service Office, to discriminate categories. All categories may – based on their top sports status –apply to the student advisor for adaptation of their study programme and to UM Sports Services for general facilities.

Regulations on Financial Support for Students UM (FOS)

The financial facilities vary for different levels of top-class sport. Top-class sportsmen who are classified in the highest level, the A-status, will usually be eligible for a scholarship provided by the NOC/NSF.
