Study related legal support

Student Deans
The student deans counsel in a variety of areas, in particular those relating to the legal position of students. Moreover, the student deans assist students with (personal) problems that are not related to the contents of the study. The consultations are confidential.

Student deans help you when you have questions about:

• your rights in case of a study delay
• student grants
• studying with a functional impairment
• management jobs
• other questions concerning your rights as a student.

Another area where student deans are often consulted is that of financial assistance. The regional offices of DUO are the primary addresses to turn to for more information on one’s individual entitlement to financial assistance. But in a number of cases, DUO will refer students to a student dean: for example, if parents refuse to contribute to the costs of a student’s studies and the student concerned wishes to appeal to the so-called substantiation clause, or if a student wishes to apply for extended financial assistance because of functional impairment. Also, students may have questions relating to their specific situation regarding information provided by DUO, or they may disagree with the information provided or decisions taken by DUO. In such cases, student deans may be called upon, who will often be able to refer or even offer mediation.
