Cultural agreements

The Dutch government has signed agreements with aover forty countries in order to promote cooperation in the fields of culture, education and science. These Cultural Agreements enable Dutch students to temporarily study and/or do research abroad, with the target country providing a grant. Every year, Nuffic distributes a list of participating countries among institutes.

HSP Talent programme


Following a decision by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, the Dutch cabinet called for the termination of the Huygens Scholarship Programme  as from 1 January 2012. This has no consequences for students currently receiving a scholarship or for the current application round.

Culture fund scholarship

Talented graduates from all disciplines of the university (MA) or higher education school (BA) can qualify for a Culture Fund Scholarship. Culture Fund Scholarships are meant for continuing- education or research abroad with a minimum duration of three months. With a scholarship the Culture Fund wants to enable scholarship students to reach their aspired future as for instance an actor, graphic artist, musician, dancer or scientist.


The amount of the Culture Fund Scholarship depends on the quality and quantity of the applications: € 1.500, € 2.500, € 5.000, € 7.500, € 10.000, € 12.500, € 15.000 or, in very exceptional cases, € 20.000.


The most important conditions are:

  • with your application you can hand in a list of marks with an average grade above 8
  • you have the Dutch nationality or are registered in the Netherlands for at least three years
  • you have a good motivation

Closing date: 1 April, prior the academic year your planning to go abroad.

VSBfund grants programme

Every year, the VSBfonds (VSBfund) provides grants to students who have successfully completed their study programme in The Netherlands and want to go abroad following their graduation. Both Master- and Bachelor graduates are eligible for the VSBfonds grants.


These grants are meant for study or research abroad, with a duration ranging from a minimum of three months to a maximum of twenty-four months.


A VSB grant is €10.000 at the most and it is a complete gift. The amount of €10.000 is only granted for a two-year Masters programme. For all other programmes the maximum amount will be €7.000. 
  

Main conditions:

  • applicants must not be older than 29
  • have the Dutch nationality or an demonstrable bond with the Netherlands
  • have a good motivation
  • the knowledge that you will gain from studying abroad, needs to be used to the advantage of the Dutch society

Application forms for VSBfund grants need to be submitted -in hard copy format- to the UM Selection Committee through Mrs. G. Baltis (secretary of the committee). She will not answer your queries on the grants programme though.

European University institute


Research grants of the the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence

The EUI was set up in 1972 by the six founding Member States of the European Communities to provide advanced academic training to doctoral researchers and to promote research at the highest level.
The EUI prepares researchers for developing and defending a doctoral thesis through a four-year Ph.D. programme
The Doctoral Programme focuses on four : History and Civilization, Law, Political and Social Sciences and Economics

160 research grants are awarded annually by the EU Member States and other European national authorities to successful candidates.
A Ph.D. from the European University Institute is an internationally recognised qualification.  
 

Admission requirements

You must meet the minimum degree requirements set by the national grant authorities by the beginning of the academic year for which you have applied.
If you are a national of Latin America, you must have graduated at the time of applying.
You need to have a good working knowledge of English.
Proficiency in one (or more) of the following languages: French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish if your specific research requires those skills

The closing date is 31 January prior to the academic year in which you want to go abroad.

Institute for European History

The Institute for European History in Mainz, Germany, provides postgraduate courses in European Theology and (Church) History of the Reformation. The institute offers young historians from all countries the possibility to do literature and archive research. The department is in principle available for any research projects relating to the history of Europe from 1500.

Scholarships (€862 a month) are available for up to 12 months. Applications to be arranged individually.


Closing date: at least 3 months before the start of the activity. Twice a year (spring & autumn).

Dutch University Institute for Art History

The Dutch University Institute for Art History in Florence, Italy, provides postgraduate courses in the History of Art. Approximately thirty scholarship months are available, to be divided among a number of applicants. Scholarships (€408 a month) are intended for master students of the History of Art.

The seventh framework programme EU/Marie Curie grants

The European Union provides grants trough the Seventh Framework Programme for international cooperation in research and technical development. In order to give young talented researchers the opportunity to perform research abroad, the Marie Curie research grants are available for the programme "Building the Europe of knowledge".


Within this programme the researcher may focus on these topics:

  • Health genomics and biotechnology
  • Technology for the information society
  • Nanotechnology, production and materials
  • Aviation- and space technology
  • Food quality and safety
  • Long-lasting energy systems
  • Civilians and management in the knowledge society

Conditions:

  • Only postgraduates, AIOs, OIOs and postdocs may apply
  • For most of the Marie Curie grants the applicant must be an inhabitant of one of the EU / EEA countries
  • Applications must deal with one of the seven priority topics
  • The research grants vary between 6 months and 36 months

Fulbright Scholarship

The Fulbright programme is the framework within which the Fulbright Center provides annual grants for study or research in the United States. The aim of the programme is to promote the understanding between American citizens and those of other countries. The grants are jointly financed by the Dutch and American governments.

Every year, about 24 scholarships are awarded, varying between €1000 and €12.500. Scholarships are granted on the basis of the application and financial needs.

  • AIO's: 1 December
