Cost of living

Getting an education costs money; that is one thing that all students agree on. You will have expenses that are directly related to your studies, for example, tuition fees, study books, and other learning materials. But living the life of a student costs money as well. When you live on your own, you will need to pay for housing, groceries, insurance and leisure activities.

Tuition fees

The tuition fees can vary considerably depending on your nationality, the programme you follow, and other criteria. View tuition fees.

Estimate of living expenses

Your living expenses will depend on your individual lifestyle. Exact costs, of course, are impossible to determine. However, we have estimated that an average student will spend about € 750 per month (excl. tuition fees).

Cost category Avg. monthly cost
Rent: including gas, water, electricity € 300
Groceries € 180
Books and materials € 40
Insurance € 98
Clothing and personal care € 95
Leisure expenses € 100
Total € 750

Maastricht is a relatively compact city, so most students spend little money on transportation since they walk or cycle everywhere. Housing will be your biggest expense. Rooms cost on average €300 per month. See the website from the Rooms Agency (Kamerburo) for more information about housing.

Your other personal expenses will vary, and please keep in mind that you may incur extra costs such as membership fees for a student association or a subscription fee for a mobile phone.
