Place of residence criterion
Please note:
The tuition fee that you will be required to pay depends not only on your place of residence. Your nationality and whether this is your second bachelor’s or master’s programme also play a role.
You are eligible for the lower tuition fee if you can submit proof of your registration in the ‘residence area’ to UM before 15 September (if you are starting your studies on 1 September) or 15 February (if you are starting your studies on 1 February). The residence area includes:
- the Netherlands,
- Belgium, Luxemburg,
- or one of the German federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony and Bremen
You can start your study programme before moving to the residence area, but bear in mind that in order to be eligible for the lower tuition fee you have to move to the residence area and submit proof of your registration in the municipality before 15 September/15 February.
If you move to the residence area after 15 September/15 February, you may still be eligible for the lower tuition fee as of the 1st day of the month after you have provided proof of your registration to UM.
- If your programme starts on 1 September and the Student Services Centre (see the contact details below) has not received proof of your registration in the Municipal Personal Records Database (GBA-registratie) by 15 September, you will be required to pay the higher tuition fee.
- If your programme starts on 1 February and the Student Services Centre (see the contact details below) has not received proof of your registration in the Municipal Personal Records Database (GBA-registratie) by 15 February 2012, you will be required to pay the higher tuition fee.
- If you live in the residence area but decide to move to an address outside it, then as of the first day of the month in which you no longer live in the residence area you will be obliged to pay the higher tuition fee rate for the remainder of the academic year.
Temporary stay outside the residence area
A temporary stay abroad may mean that you no longer fulfil the statutory residence requirement. As a result, you may be required to pay the higher tuition fee. Maastricht University would like to help you avoid this.
You can avoid the higher tuition fee by:
- ensuring before you leave that you are registered in the Municipal Personal Records Database (GBA) of a city council within the residence area
- obtaining proof of registration from your local council and submitting it to the Student Services Centre before you leave (in any event before 15 September). If you already have this proof of registration, please check that it is dated no earlier than 1 January 2012.
Periods of stay abroad
Each country has its own rules:
- Netherlands: you can stay registered in a Dutch municipality if you go abroad for no more than eight months. If you come back ‘home’ at any point within this period, the eight-month period will start again.
- Belgium: you can stay registered in Belgium if you go abroad for up to one year.
- Germany: in Germany you can be registered in two places, meaning that you can stay abroad as long as you wish.
How to obtain proof of your registration in a Dutch municipality:
- You can request proof of your registration in a Dutch municipality (GBA-registratie) online via DIGID.
- Someone other than you can collect your proof of registration provided that he/she is in possession of both a copy of your passport and a written authorisation.
It has been agreed with the Maastricht municipal council that if two students are registered at the same address, one of whom is living abroad temporarily,
- the student abroad is registered in the GBA on the basis of their postal address
- the student who is temporarily subletting the residence is registered at that address.
This allows both students to retain their GBA registration.
If you do not live in Maastricht, please contact your local council to find out what the procedure is there.
Please note:
You are required to personally report any change in your address to the information desk in the Student Services Centre.
