Universiteit Maastricht

Automatic graduation

As of 1 September 2010 you graduate automatically as soon as you fulfill all the requirements, meaning once you obtain the necessary ECTS and meet possible additional exam requirements.

With this measure the Dutch government wants to prevent students from using the university facilities longer than necessary. This national cutback applies to all universities and schools of higher education (HBO) in the Netherlands and, therefore, also to Maastricht University.

How does it work?

You no longer have to send in a graduation request. As soon as you obtain the necessary ECTS and meet the other exam requirements, you automatically receive a graduation notification from your faculty.

PLEASE NOTE: the deregistration process from Maastricht University does not change. When you graduate you still have to submit a deregistration request.

Very limited grounds for postponement of graduation

In extremely exceptional cases you can submit a request to postpone your graduation to the Board of Examiners of your programme. The Board will then determine whether your request is accepted or not.

Please note that you should submit this request in time, i.e., before you hand in your last assignment or sit your last exam. For further information, please contact the Board of Examiners of your programme.
