UM students enrolling in UCM courses
When students from other departments of Maastricht University want to enroll in courses at UCM the rules for admission are as follows:
1. Students who want to be sure of enrolment in an UCM course have to meet the following deadlines:
Spring 2012 courses: December 9th, 2011
Fall 2012 courses: May 25th, 2012
After expiry of these deadlines students can still apply by handing in their application conform to the UM wide deadlines. Please keep in mind that even if you receive an approval of the Examination Committee, enrolment is only possible upon availability.
Period 1: July 15th, 2011
Period 2: September 18th, 2011
Period 3: November 13th, 2011
Period 4: December 9th, 2011
Period 5: February 19th, 2012
Period 6: April 22nd, 2012
Applying after the UM wide deadlines is only possible by paying the late fee of 35 € and upon availability.
2. The registration should include a letter of motivation (approx. 1200-1400 words), in which you explain your reasons for wishing to follow courses at UCM. Topics addressed in the letter should include reasons for choosing your current Bachelor’s Program, reasons why the courses at UCM comply with / fit in with your current program and possible other courses you plan to follow in the same course period.
3. The registration should also include a recent official transcript with a calculation of the Grade Point Average (GPA) and Progress Rate (PR). The Grade Point Average is calculated by dividing the ‘sum of weighted grades’ by the ‘sum of credits’. The sum of weighted grades is calculated by adding the overall assessments for modules passed multiplied by the credit value of these modules. The sum of credits is calculated by adding the number of credits of the modules the student has passed and thus received credit for. The Progress Rate is calculated by dividing the total number of credits a student has obtained by the total of credits the program enabled the student to obtain up to the moment the calculation is made. Also include a written reflection on your GPA and your PR.
4. All students except SBE students should include the permission of the Examination Committee of their own faculty in their application.
FASoS Bachelor students please note: 3rd year students have permission to follow UCM courses in the fifth semester (which does not guarantee selection by UCM!). All other students (3rd year students in the sixth semester and 2nd year students in semesters three and four), need a positive advice from the student advisor beforehand. On presentation of this advice you can ask for a transcript at the (FASoS) Front Office; both transcript and (a copy of) the positive advice (and the other required documents) have to be handed in at UCM. UCM will book these modules under the programme Extra Curricular Courses. You can get a separate transcript of these extra-curricular courses at the Front Office of UCM or FASoS.
If you would like the UCM credits to be acknowledged in your bachelor program, you will have to ask for the Board of Examiners’ permission. If you need these credits in order to fulfil the required number of 24 ECTS (ES) or 30 ECTS (CW/AC) of the elective units of study of the fifth semester, your request will be granted and the Board will record your results under your bachelor program. Otherwise the credits will remain registered as extra-curricular courses.
5. Language Proficiency: Art 2.3. of the UCM Student Handbook 2009-2010.
Since English is the working language at UCM non-native speakers are required to demonstrate proof of proficiency. Students with an IB or European Baccalaureate diploma are exempted. Dutch VWO students who, for English language, have a grade of 7 or higher on their VWO gradelist are also exempted. Students who cannot present a VWO diploma with a 7 for the English language on their gradelist should present an equivalent diploma with an equivalent result. Students who have followed an English bachelor’s program at Maastricht University for the period of at least one year are also exempted. All other prospective students must present a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or an IELTS (International English Testing System) test, before s/he can be registered. The score of the TOEFL has to be at least 575 points (paper based version) or 230 points (computer based version) or 88 points (internet based version). The score of the IELTS test has to be at least 6.5. The test must be passed before the student is enrolled at UCM.
The UCM Examination Committee & the Office of Student Affairs will review all applications under the condition that these are complete and received on time. After reviewing the final admission decision will be made. If courses are full, UCM students will be given priority over students from other Maastricht University departments. An e-mail with information on assignments will be sent to you at the latest one week before the courses begin. This message will contain the course(s) you are enrolled in, where course information can be obtained and any further practical information.
