Types of PhD researchers
PhD profile
PhD Candidates should have obtained a relevant Master’s Degree with excellent grades and should be motivated and determined researchers possessing first-rate analytical and writing skills in Dutch and/or English. Candidates should have also a clear idea what they want to achieve with the PhD programme. This could be either an academic career as an employed researcher or a research career as an external researcher, in addition to a non academic career.
PhD positions
In most countries a doctoral candidate is considered to be a student who studies. In the Netherlands, PhD candidates are usually researchers who are employed by a faculty or school to complete a dissertation or thesis. To encourage and facilitate doctoral research, PhD researchers at Maastricht University are offered all necessary research facilities.
Some PhD positions are funded by Maastricht University or by the Dutch government (NWO or NUFFIC). Other PhD positions are funded by private organisations or the national government of the PhD fellow. You must qualify for employment to apply for PhD positions.
Non-resident PhD candidates
Non-resident doctoral candidates support themselves financially while pursuing their PhD research under supervision of a senior academic staff member of the faculty. They are working (full-time or part-time) on their PhD thesis from their home country.
The Maastricht Graduate School of Law is able to accommodate a limited number of short term visiting scholars with a working space and access to the Law library. Click here for further information about the criteria.
