Programme information

The Artificial Intelligence master’s programme focuses on the development and application of computer systems that simulate human intelligence, learning, reasoning and collaboration. These systems are used to solve challenging problems in today’s society.

During the first year of the programme, students participate in two research projects that incorporate knowledge gained from a series of courses, including:

  • machine learning
  • multi-agent systems
  • intelligent search techniques
  • games and AI
  • knowledge retrieval
  • text mining

During the first part of the second year, the programme allows you to pursue personal interests while working on your research topic and master’s thesis. You can do the following:

  • take additional courses, including those at other faculties
  • participate in the research projects of the academic staff
  • do an internship at a company
  • follow an exchange programme at a university abroad

During the second part of the second year, you will work on your research topic and master’s thesis under the supervision of academic staff. Research can be done internally or externally, at a company or another university. Your thesis must be publicly defended at the conclusion of the programme.

Throughout the programme, you will have the opportunity to tailor your education to your own learning goals. During the first year, students can exchange some Artificial Intelligence courses with those of the Operations Research master’s. In the second year, you may participate in internships, international exchanges and courses from other master’s programmes at Maastricht University and at universities abroad.
