Artificial Intelligence
As computers become increasingly powerful, more intelligent systems capable of simulating human learning and decision-making are possible. These intelligent systems are applied to perform tasks more efficiently and in a distributed way. The master’s programme in Artificial Intelligence prepares graduate students to apply intelligent computer systems to a variety of applications.
The programme is organised under the Department of Knowledge Engineering of Maastricht University’s Faculty of Humanities and Sciences. Researchers in the department are developing intelligent systems for a wide range of applications including patient diagnosis, image recognition, traditional games like chess, interactive computer games, information retrieval and data mining.
The programme emphasises the following research topics:
- machine learning to explore relations in datasets
- multi-agent systems of collaborating autonomous intelligent systems
- situated agents that can operate in environments using uncertain observations
- formal techniques for knowledge representation and reasoning in agents
- intelligent techniques for solving board games
- intelligent techniques for controlling virtual characters in commercial computer games
- extracting interesting and non-trivial information and knowledge from unstructured text
- information retrieval techniques for identifying useful information in large unstructured datasets
Artificial Intelligence is a two-year master’s programme taught entirely in English.
