The research interdisciplinarity of Maastricht University is enhanced around three themes by which we are creating mass and focus in research in parallel with our education strategy:
• ‘Learning and Innovation’,
• ‘Quality of Life’,
• ‘Europe and a Globalising World’.
Learning and Innovation
Learning and innovation lie at the heart of our university. Maastricht is known for its innovative approach to education and for its university wide choice for problem based learning. At a micro-level research varies from the exploration of neurological foundations of learning to research in (new) educational formats to enhance individual learning, not only in school but also in workplace settings. Meso- and macro-level research include the evaluation of educational interventions both at school and at systems level, as well as corporate and organisational learning and social innovation.
Quality of Life
This interdisciplinary research programme focuses on the well-being of individuals in the context of a safe, healthy, sustainable and financially secure society. An important infrastructure of this research programme is situated on the Maastricht Health Campus. This Campus is home to the largest academic health science cluster in Europe, which serves the entire health continuum from top referral and top clinical care to prevention and rehabilitation. This is linked with an infrastructure for public health interventions, high-quality laboratories and clinical trial facilities, and a unique imaging platform. The research excels in four key areas: cardiovascular diseases, mental health and neurosciences, metabolic aspects of chronic diseases, and primary care and health sciences.
Europe and a Globalising World
During the last decades the European integration process and the position of Europe as a specific actor on the global scene has increased enormously. At Maastricht University we have developed several major interdisciplinary research lines that deal with questions about the role of Europe in a globalising world. We study several aspects of the European Union, such as the functioning of the European Union itself, the role of Europe on the global stage and for example the tensions between cultural memory and diversity on the European and global level.
