“I enrolled in the masters of health professions education (MHPE) programme in Maastricht in 1992 as pioneer student and clinician, with an interest in medical education. I was particularly curious, about what the programme could offer me as a clinical teacher. Currently, as an assistant Professor in medical education, the deputy director of the paediatric residency programme and the coordinator of the paediatric clerkship programme in my department, this curiosity has transformed into a conviction that a degree in health professions education is valuable for clinical teachers.

I'm certain that the MHPE programme contributed to the preparation I needed, to handle these and the other professional teaching roles I'm currently involved with.

The first thing that struck me when I enrolled in the programme 16 years ago was the concept of distance learning and the opportunity to tailor the programme to the participants’ working environment.  The international character of the programme, which involved participants from all over the world, from different educational contexts and with different professional backgrounds, provided a rich source of practical contexts to learn from. The problem based method of learning that was used in the programme; a unique trade mark of Maastricht University, was unlike the conventional methods of learning I was used to then. This method of learning was not only stimulating, but also facilitated my active participation in the educational process.

Overall, the quality of the MHPE programme addresses my desires as a healthcare professional and as a teacher. It is an excellent programme for broadening existing teaching skills and developing new ones, while providing a solid foundation for developing new strategies in health care education and research.”
