18 June 2010

He has assumed his new duties as of June 2010. The IARC, headquartered in Lyon, is the World Health Organization’s cancer research agency. Van den Brandt has years of experience in the field of cancer epidemiology, focusing in particular on molecular epidemiology and the relation between diet and cancer.

The IARC’s mission is to coordinate and conduct research into the causes of cancer in humans, the mechanisms underlying the formation of tumours and the development of preventive strategies. Added to which, the IARC has been producing common reference material on the worldwide spread of cancer, the evaluation of carcinogenic substances, cancer pathology and the genetic aspects of tumours for years.

The Scientific Council is composed of nominated experts who are involved in various fields of cancer research. The Council also provides recommendations for the Governing Council on programmes and budgets. The appointment is for a period of four years.
