Kick off of Aachen-Maastricht Institute for Biobased Materials6 February 2013
Maastricht University has set up a partnership with RWTH Aachen in the form of the cross-border Aachen-Maastricht Institute for Bio-based Materials (AMIBM) on the Chemelot Campus. The AMIBM is to research modern biobased materials, which could stir up a revolution in materials science. Its purpose: the development of new, innovative and sustainable materials made from plants rather than fossil materials. The AMIBM presented its research and development programme to representatives of biobased materials companies at the ‘AMIBM meets Industry 2013’ session on 1 February. This session introduced researchers and potential parties in the industry to each other, injecting new vigour into biobased materials research.

Biomass for new materials
AMIBM studies biomass like plants and vegetable residues. Biomass is extremely suitable as green feedstock materials and chemicals, while offering all the environmental benefits: less consumption of fossil fuels and less waste. In addition, the prospects for extracting complex high-grade building blocks and polymers from plants are promising.
Chemelot Campus is a top location for bio-based research
AMIBM’s choice for the Chemelot Campus is logical: government, industry and knowledge institutes work together closely at this open innovation campus. Consequently, public-private partnerships with SMEs and start-ups are quickly launched, while the process of laboratory design to production is accelerated. Accordingly, the institute contributes to the further growth of the Chemelot Campus, reinforcing the international ambitions of Brainport2020, constructing new programmes and confirming the biobased character of this region.
A cross-border partnership
Each of the partners contributes their individual excellence; the UM supplies internationally renowned researchers from the disciplines biology, (bio)chemistry, polymer technology and clinical expertise. RWTH supplies expertise in molecular biology, plant-biotechnology, molecular sciences and clinical expertise. The method used by the institute is a prime example of a cross-border partnership founded on the individual strengths of both institutes.
