John Petrila receives Fulbright Grant

Prof. John Petrila recently received a Fulbright Grant to collaborate for half a year (from January to July 2011) with Prof. Corine de Ruiter and other members of the Forensic Psychology section at the FPN in Maastricht. John Petrila is professor of the Department of Mental Health Law & Policy at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida (US). During his stay in Maastricht he will also provide a Master class in International Comparative Mental Health Law for students in the new two-year Forensic Psychology master.


John Petrila is a lawyer who does research in the area of the development of alternative criminal punishment for people with a psychiatric problem who break the law. Additionally, he is co-author of Psychological Evaluations for the Courts: A Handbook for Mental Health Professionals and Lawyers, the leading book on forensic behavioural research in the US and Canada. Petrila is also Past-President of the International Association of Forensic Mental Health Services (IAFMHS), member of the MacArthur Foundation Research Network on Mandated Community Care, and editor of the Behavioral Sciences and the Law journal.
