"Is the EU Becoming the ‘Gazprom Union'?"

7 May 2012

MEP Prof. Vytautas Landsbergis, former President of the Republic of Lithuania, leader of the Lithuanian independence movement in 1989-1992. He was the first head of state of Lithuania after its independence declaration from the Soviet Union, and served as the Head of the Lithuanian Parliament Seimas. Professor Landsbergis is an intellectual who has been active in Lithuania's political arena for almost two decades, and is a notable politician who helped contribute to the demise of the Soviet Union.

He has received a number of awards and honorary doctorates such as The Norwegian People's Peace Prize for his role in the restoration of Lithuanian independence, UNESCO Medal for developing democracy and fighting for human rights and nomination for an honorary degree of Doctor of Law by Yale University.

However, it is not only the impressive profile that makes Prof. Vytautas Landsbergis an exceptionally charismatic politician but also his firm principles, convictions and morals. As New York Times (1990) puts it: “as a child of the old Lithuanian intellectual aristocracy and a lifelong non-Communist he represented a clean break with 50 years of Communist rule”. Today, his views on the EU-Russia relations remain intriguingly critical. Why? Come and find out:
