Important information for prospective master's students: Introduction of broad master labels in the field Arts & Culture

12 July 2011

As of September 2012, a national restructuring in the field of the humanities will have an impact on the master's programmes in the field of Arts and Culture at Maastricht University. The background is that at this point in time, there are over 250 master’s programmes in the humanities field offered throughout the Netherlands. Often similar programmes at various universities appear under a different name, making it difficult for students to understand the similarities and differences at the first glance.

To make the range of master’s programmes in the humanities more structured and less confusing to prospective students, all universities have agreed to file these master’s programmes under specific labels. In total, there will be twenty-one broad master labels in the humanities nation-wide. The content and curricula of the programmes will mostly remain the same.

The implementation of the labels will not affect students of the academic year 2011/2012.

Students intending to apply for a master's in the Arts and Culture field for the academic year 2012/2013 need to be aware of the correct label name that is linked to their programme of choice. The label name will appear in Studielink and the "My UM"-portal during the application and registration procedure. Upon graduation, both the label name and the programme name will be mentioned on your master's diploma.

Please find an overview of the changes below. Please read them carefully if you're a prospective applicant:

  • MA Arts and Sciences: will be split into two programmes called MA Art, Literature and Society (incl. the track Artistic Research) and MA Politics and Society, filed under the label "Arts and Culture". These programmes are also available in Dutch with the respective names MA Kunst, literatuur en samenleving and MA Politiek en samenleving. The Dutch label name is "Kunst- en Cultuurwetenschappen".
  • MA Arts and Heritage: Policy, Management and Education: filed under the label "Arts and Culture". The Dutch version of the programme is called MA Kunst, cultuur en erfgoed, belonging to the label "Kunst- en cultuurwetenschappen".
  • MA Media Culture: filed under the label "Media Studies"
  • MSc Cultures of Arts, Science and Technology (research master): filed under the label "Arts and Culture (research)"
  • MA European Studies on Society, Science and Technology: filed under the label "European Studies". Please note that we also have a master's programme in the field of Political Sciences called European Studies (which is not subject to a broad master's label)!

Please note that the masters in the field of Political Sciences (MA European Studies, MSc European Studies, MA European Public Affairs and MA Globalisation and Development Studies) are not affected by the introduction of the labels.

You can find an overview of all master's programmes offered by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences here.
