European Law Moot Court won by four Maastricht law students
21 April 2010
Four students from the Faculty of Law at Maastricht University have won the European Law Moot Court Competiton (ELMC), one of Europe’s most famous and prestigious pleading competitions.
During the final, which was presided over by judges from the EU Court of Justice in Luxembourg, the Maastricht Moot Court Team defeated contenders from Zagreb and Lyon, as well as the Irish Law Society team. In the semifinal in Madrid, they had already beaten teams from the European University Institute in Florence, the College of Europe in Bruges, the University of Vienna, Utrecht University, the University of Aix-en-Provence, and elsewhere.
The participants were assessed by an expert jury, composed of eight members of the EU Court of Justice (judges as well as advocates-general). The themes revolved around topical issues in the area of European migration law.
During the final, the Maastricht contingent – which consisted of Iona Ebben (Master in European Law School), Ranish Sijben (Master in European Law School), Adrien Gabinaud (Master in Globalisation and Law) and Julian Grosse (Master in International Laws) – were rated as the best team. This followed on from their semifinal success, in which they won the prize for the best written defence.
This latest ELMC performance carries on a long line of victories. Since 1997, the various Maastricht teams have reached the final nine times, and brought home the overall trophy five times.
