Entrepreneur Meeting MKB Portal 06.09.2010. “Entrepreneurship for the future”

27 July 2010

Is your business ready for the future?

It has become increasingly important to subject a business to good strategies: where is your business headed, what are the current paradoxes in society, and how should you, as an entrepreneur, respond to these paradoxes. These and other aspects will be the central topic for the next entrepreneurs meeting, “Entrepreneurship for the Future”.

The SME Portal Maastricht University cordially invites you to this meeting, which will be opened by the vice president of Maastricht University’s Executive Board, André Postema.

After the plenary opening, you are welcome to take part in one of the following master classes:
Value creation through risk management

The prices of raw materials have fluctuated increasingly over the past few years as a result of changes in the political climate, the emergence of up-and-coming economies such as Brazil and China, and of course the credit crisis. This volatility has made risk management more topical than ever. Prof. ir. Joost Pennings, professor of Behavioural Finance at ALEX Investment Bank and professor of Marketing at Maastricht University, is an authority in the field of Risk Management, and in this master class he addresses the use of various instruments for managing price risks.

Innovation in family businesses

Are family-run businesses more innovative than other companies? This is the central question in the master class that will be delivered by Dr Anita van Gils, Dr Yannick Bammens and Drs Nicolas Classen from the Department of Strategy and Organisation at the School of Business and Economics. They present the findings of recent research into innovation in family-run businesses, and lead an interactive discussion to identify factors that promote innovation in such businesses.

New leadership

As a consequence of the economic and financial crisis, important questions have been raised in public opinion about how leadership manifests itself within and towards organisations. There is a clear need in society for a new type of leadership. In this interactive master class Prof. Dr Mariëlle Heijltjes, professor of Managerial Behaviour and responsible for postgraduate education at the School of Business and Economics, addresses the question what new leadership entails in this context, and what this means for you as a leader.

Asian Emerging Markets and a new paradigm for business strategies

Global economy and international business are witnessing a decisive shift in the centre of their gravity. In this session Dr Sanya Sharma, director of the India Instituut Maastricht University, provides a timely and fine-tuned understanding of this changing paradigm of global business, and how new players in international business are rewriting the rules and setting norms. He touches upon specific opportunities and challenges in emerging markets and offers food for thought on the various business strategies deployed to realise these opportunities and tackle these challenges.

Following the entrepreneurs meeting the official ceremony for the Opening of the Academic Year will take place, at 15.15 hrs in Maastricht's local theatre “Theater aan het Vrijthof”. This year’s theme is “University for the Future”. You are warmly invited to attend this ceremony as well.

The fee for attending the entrepreneurs meeting is €25 per person; you will receive an invoice after you have registered on-line.
