Award and Tans Medal for Gerard Mols

29 June 2012

During his farewell as Rector Magnificus at Maastricht University on Friday 29 June, Professor Gerard Mols received two awards for his achievements as rector.

The City of Maastricht awarded a first honorary medal to Professor Mols. Professor Martin Paul, president of Maastricht University, presented him with the second award, the Dr J.G.H. Tans Medal, the highest medal of distinction given at UM. It is named after the university’s founder, Sjeng Tans. Mols was recognised for the significant contribution he has made to the internationalisation of Maastricht University and the strengthening of partnerships in the region. For more information, see this press release.

Earlier this year, Mols was appointed Officer of the Order of Oranje-Nassau for his special merits in both his main function as rector and his other positions.

Mols will be succeeded by Professor Luc Soete. Mols will continue to work as rector until September, when Soete will officially start his appointment. With a term of eight years and eight months, Mols will be the longest serving Rector Magnificus of Maastricht University.
