On 27 April, the University of Malawi hosted a three-day seminar which counted with the participation of over 30 representatives of African universities and several experts on African higher education. Among the participants were representatives of the following African universities: University of Mauritius, Republic of Mauritius; University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania; Moi University, Kenya; University of Cape Coast, Ghana; University of Malawi; Catholic University of Mozambique; University of Kisangani, Congo. The international group of educational experts included Damtew Teferra (Ethiopia), Dan Ncayiyana (South Africa), Olusola Oyewole (Nigeria), Juma Shabani (Mali), Fred Hayward (US), Ana Bon (the Netherlands) and Martin Prowse (UK). To represent Maastricht University were Han Aarts, director of Mundo, and Heinz Greijn, project manager.
This seminar is part of the educational project entitled “African Universities develop strategies addressing the implications of Globalization”. Funded by Edulink, this project aims to increase the expertise of eight African universities in developing strategies that will deliver graduates equipped to tap global knowledge resources and apply what they have learned in support of local and regional development.
During three days each African university presented a draft strategy to address the changes posed by globalization. Each draft was peer reviewed by two selected participants who then shared their views with the audience. This was followed by a general analysis and discussion. The outcome of will be this seminar will be that each university develops an action plan to be ready in June this year.
According to Han Aarts, this was a very inspiring and dynamic seminar. All participants were very positive about the organization and particularly liked the seminar’s intra-African nature. On behalf of Maastricht University, Mundo would like to thank the University of Malawi for making this seminar such a successful event.
