University College Maastricht moves to first position on list of the Dutch University Guide 2012

6 December 2011

As in previous years Maastricht University (UM) ranked high in the Dutch University Guide (Keuzegids)2012. 13 of the 16 assessed bachelor programmes ranked in the top 3, 7 of which took first place. It is the first time University College Maastricht has taken the first position in their category. Maastricht University, as in previous years, ranks third in the overall list of the 7 medium-sized universities, behind Wageningen University and Eindhoven University of Technology.

The Dutch University Guide is issued annually by an independent editorial staff of the Information Centre for Higher Education (CHOI) as a guide for prospective students. The ranking lists of the Dutch University Guide 2012 are compiled based on the opinion of experts and students on the programmes, lecturers, facilities and more.

This is the first year that University College Maastricht (UCM) takes the top position in the ranking list of university colleges. Last year Maastricht took fourth position. This year’s score of 8.6 leaves UCM’s competition far behind. Experts especially praise the high standard at graduation of UCM’s students, who in turn are satisfied on all levels. Harm Hospers, Dean of UCM: ‘We are particularly delighted with this splendid result. Our first position ranking is due to the exceptional efforts and dedication of the UCM staff and the lecturers of the other  faculties.’

High scores were also awarded to the programmes of International Business (1st with 7.8), Economics (2nd with 7.6) and Medicine (tied in 2nd with 7.6). Psychology (2nd with 6.8), Arts and Culture (2nd with 6.4) and European Studies (1st with 6.0) all rank substantially higher than last year. Arts and Culture are mistakenly ranked in the printed edition of the ‘Keuzegids’. Here Maastricht is ranked third whilst the scores entitle a second position ranking.
