Maastricht conference on the theme ‘punishment’, 150 years after the abolition of the death penalty
On 31 October 2010, exactly 150 years will have passed since Johannes Nathan was hanged at Maastricht’s market square for murdering his mother-in-law. This was the last public execution in the Netherlands. In honour of this historic occasion, the Centre for Human Rights of the Maastricht Faculty of Law has organised a special and broadly based two-day conference on 28 and 29 October 2010, with the theme ‘punishment’. This theme will be examined from a judicial, medical, legal-psychological, economic and social-scientific perspective.
In addition to three keynote speakers, Professor D. Garland (New York University), Professor C.H. Brants (Utrecht University) and prof. dr. J.C.J. Boutellier (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), the conference will also offer several interactive workshops, where participants are invited to discuss various themes and topics. Several activities have been organised, including a political café, a debate night, a photography exhibition, films and lectures.
The first conference day will conclude with a re-enactment of the Johannes Nathan case at the Maastricht City Hall by criminal law representatives.
