Organisation of research

Research at Maastricht University is undertaken by multidisciplinary teams working on relevant social themes. The university has established a number of research institutes to carry out this research. Each insitute covers a certain domain. These institutes have independent boards and management, and often work in collaboration with external parties in the Netherlands and abroad.

Graduate schools have been established for the specific purpose of organizing and managing PhD training. Also master programs that prepare for a PhD trajectory are often governed by graduate schools, particularly the so-called research masters. In most cases local graduate schools are linked to national or international research schools.

The fundamental entities of research are the groups that are formed around appointed full professors.
