Types of master's programmes
There are several types of master's degrees awarded at Maastricht University. Here you can find an overview.
Master of Arts, Master of Science
The Master of Arts (MA) and the Master of Science (MSc) titles are given for programmes in which a student obtains expertise in a particular area of study. This expertise is combined with practical skills that together can be directly applied to a career. These programmes usually take one year and culminate in an internship, in writing a master's thesis, or a combination of the two.
Research master
The research master is based on a more analytical approach and takes two years to complete. Most students who know that they wish to obtain a PhD choose the research master. The intense focus on research and writing skills prepare them to write a PhD dissertation.
Master of Laws
Maastricht University also offers several Master of Laws (LLM) programmes. These programmes take
one or two years and focus on a specific area of law.
Medical Doctor
Maastricht University also offers Medical Doctor (MD) programmes. These programmes take at least three years.
Programmes for professionals
In order to meet a growing need for programmes that fit the busy lives of professionals, we offer a number of graduate programmes for professionals. The majority of these programmes are part-time, allowing students to continue with their career while furthering their education. Some of these programmes, ranging from the MBA to the Master’s in Affective Neuroscience, lead to a master’s degree.
