Application procedure

  • Step 1: Start PhD application
    • PhD applicants must apply to the graduate school themselves. They can either gather information about an available PhD position or send an open PhD application. Applicants should check the research themes of graduate schools beforehand to determine if their research goals are in line with those of the school research teams
    • The deadline for CSC scholarship applications is 20 March. PhD applicants should keep this in mind when submitting an application in order to have time for the CSC scholarship application, and encourage the graduate school to send a response by 1 March
  • Step 2: PhD application confirmed
    • Graduate schools will inform PhD candidates whether or not their application is accepted. PhD applicants must have either an unconditional admission letter in order to apply for the CSC scholarship
  • Step 3: Start scholarship application
    • After receiving written confirmation of admission to PhD studies from the graduate school, PhD applicants can begin their scholarship application at CSC and submit the required documents by 20 March
  • Step 4: Scholarship application confirmed
    • CSC will evaluate applications and send applicants the results. Scholarship agreements must be signed between CSC and the candidate to provide proof that CSC will provide PhD applicants with living expenses for a period of 48 months. CSC normally takes one month to process the scholarship application. Most applicants get scholarship application results around May
  • Step 5: Start visa application
    • Upon acceptance into the CSC scholarship programme, PhD applicants must inform their graduate school. The graduate school will contact the Knowledge Centre for International Staff (KCIS) in order to begin the visa application. The PhD research applicant must prepare the documents required by both the graduate school and KCIS. The graduate school will prepare the guest agreement for the PhD applicant and KCIS will arrange the entry visa. The visa application procedure should begin as soon as possible, as the visa application can take 4-6 weeks
    • KCIS will inform the PhD applicant as soon as results are received from IND. The research applicant can collect their visa in China
  • Step 6: PhD Contract
    • PhD applicants can only sort out their contracts after arriving in the Netherlands
