Studying and Top Sport

Studying in Maastricht and practicing competition level sport can be challenging. To prevent poor performance in either activity, top sporters can apply for support within the possibilities of the Maastricht study system.

What does this support look like?

Support can take the following forms:

  • Study facilities, such as an adjustment to the student’s curriculum, in so far as provisions have been made for this by the relevant faculty.
  • Regulation Financial Support for UM Students (FOS)
  • More general facilities, such as training facilities (fitness pass UM SPORT) or assistance in finding appropriate student housing.

Please note:  whether you are eligible for support and the kind of support you can get will be determined in advance depending on the specifics of each situation.  Not only your particular situation as a student sports practitioner will be taken into consideration.  Making an adjustment to a curriculum or providing facilities will always be done within the bounds of what is possible and reasonable. This is also the case for support provided by the FOS regulation. FOS follows set criteria. The earlier you address what you need in order to play top sport alongside your study, the greater the chance of finding a workable solution.

Who is eligible?
In order to determine whether you are engaged in ‘top sport,’ the UM will consult with NOC/NSF and/or Topsport Limburg. A number of categories have been established on the basis of which a top sporter can apply to the study advisor at his or her faculty for a curriculum adjustment, and on the basis of which he or she can apply to UM Sport for general support facilities.
