Tourism in Antarctica

Machiel Lamers, researcher Faculty of Humanities and Sciences

On average, approximately 45,000 tourists visit Antarctica each year. Machiel Lamers, who works for the International Centre for Integrated assessment and Sustainable development (ICIS), researches the effects of this tourism on Antarctica. He has regular contact with UM’s Department of Press and Science Communication, which has led to parts of his research appearing in the daily newspaper Spits and the university’s Research Magazine. The latter, he thinks, is well known among journalists. “When the article was published, I got several phone calls from the national press and was interviewed by Radio 1.”
