The modern equivalent of dungeons

Corine de Ruiter, professor of Forensic Psychology

“The emphasis on repression, locking people up in the modern equivalent of dungeons as a basic government strategy to control crime, is completely outdated and at odds with the scientific insights that psychology has yielded over the past decades.” This according to the press release on the inaugural lecture of Corine de Ruiter, professor of Forensic Psychology. After its release, everyone wanted to talk to her: from the NRC and Trouw newspapers to the VPRO and AVRO television stations. De Ruiter now has a lot of contacts in the media world. “I think just about every current affairs programme has my telephone number”, she says, smiling. “And I’m quite happy about it. Programmes like Netwerk, Nova and Buitenhof get a lot of viewers.”
