UM students graduate the fastest
Students who want to finish their bachelor’s within four years should choose Maastricht University. Nowhere in the Netherlands is the ‘bachelor’s graduation rate’ higher than in Maastricht: in 2007 (the most recent reference year) it was 78%. Another factor which can determine the success rate of undergraduate students is the percentage of students who at the end of the first year re-register for the same programme at the same university. UM scores above average with 75% (reference year 2010).
Background
Students’ ‘graduation rate’ is an important quality indicator for institutions of higher education in the Netherlands. The Association of Universities in the Netherlands (VSNU) releases reports on this topic nationwide which are also used by the ‘Keuzegids’, the Dutch guide to higher education. However, the research regarding the ‘graduation rate’ only focuses on students with a vwo diploma, in other words, Dutch students. With 51% non-Dutch first-year students, this is not a representative sample as far as UM is concerned.
We are interested in the success rate of our complete student population. To maintain our quality of education in the future, we are investing structurally in educational innovation in the next couple of years. We are doing so with programmes such as the master plan Leading in Learning: at both faculty and university level.
