Top 3% study for 'free'

Maastricht University (UM) wants to encourage talent. Attracting, cherishing and stimulating talented students is one of the main aims of the 2007/10 Strategic Programme. For this purpose, we give the top 3% of students the opportunity to study at UM 'free of charge'.

Scholarship
As from the 2007/08 academic year, the ‘best 3%’ of students will be eligible for a scholarship in the amount of their tuition fees for that year. The scholarship will be applied to the following academic year, on the condition of course that they continue their studies at UM. The amount for the final year of the bachelor’s programme will be applied toward the master’s programme. Students in the final year of a master’s programme will receive their tuition back in the form of an award instead of a scholarship.

Selection
The best 3% of students from each year of study will be selected per faculty. Each faculty has its own selection criteria based on a number of UM-wide criteria. All students will be eligible to compete for a scholarship or award every year. In this way, a student managing to stay in the top 3% will be able to finish his or her entire studies without having to pay tuition. Other expenses and living costs are not covered by the scheme.

Festive ceremony
On 10 December 2009, the group of top 3% UM bachelor’s and master’s students will receive their Top 3% Award. This will be celebrated during a festive ceremony at “Het Theater op het Vrijthof”.
