Our teaching staff

As a university, we recognise that our students are talented in different ways, and our teaching staff work hard to bring out the best in all of our students. Maastricht University employs over 3,500 staff, more than half of which is academic staff. They contribute their knowledge and know-how to education as tutors, experts, curriculum designers, course coordinators, mentors and skills trainers.

International character
The staff, as well as the student body, is becoming increasingly international. Currently,  over 30% of Maastricht University staff has an international background.

Fostering talent
The importance of education for Maastricht University is reflected in tutors’ career opportunities. Performance in both education and research are equally valued in their personal career development. University staff are on a constant quest to further their own personal development by drawing up personal career plans in conjunction with the university.

PBL training
Maastricht University’s Problem-Based Learning (PBL) requires special teaching staff who are able to play a seemingly modest role by using thier expertise to serve the learning process in which the student is central. The university trains and guides new tutors in Problem-Based Learning by regularly offering specific courses, such as ‘teaching in the international classroom’ and ‘the use of e-learning’.

Education Prize
The Education Prize is widely known at Maastricht University. Each year, the prize is awarded to a person or group that makes or has made a special contribution to the university’s education.
